Creating and Managing Criteria Sets

How to build reusable lists of skills (criteria sets), link them to programs, and use them to track student progress with LVS.

Last updated 4 June 2026

LVS lets you define reusable lists of skills or milestones — called criteria sets — attach them to programs, and track each student's progress against those criteria lesson by lesson. A typical example is a diploma level such as Diploma A with criteria like survival swimming, underwater orientation, and stroke technique.

Criteria sets are managed under Settings → Class Settings → Criteria sets. Once a set is linked to a program, instructors record progress on each lesson — see Tracking student progress on a lesson.

Criteria sets overview

The Criteria sets page lists every set in your organization. Each row shows:

  • The set's name
  • The number of criteria it contains
  • Which programs it is used in
  • How many students are being tracked against it
  • When it was last updated

The list can be searched and filtered. Create a new set with the New criteria set button.

Creating a criteria set

Creating a set is a two-step flow.

  1. Click New criteria set.
  2. Give the set a name (e.g. Diploma A, Beginner skills).
  3. Optionally, copy the criteria from an existing set instead of starting from scratch — useful for making variants, such as creating Diploma A+ based on Diploma A.
  4. Click Create & add criteria to open the set's detail page, where you add the actual criteria.

Managing a criteria set

On a set's detail page you manage its criteria and its program links.

Criteria

Each criterion has a title and a longer description — for example A1 – Survival (with clothes) together with the full requirement text.

  • Add a criterion with Add criterion.
  • Edit a criterion via its pencil icon.
  • Reorder criteria by dragging the handle on the left.

The order here is the order instructors see when tracking progress, so arrange criteria in the sequence that makes sense for your school.

Set actions

  • Duplicate the set with the Duplicate button.
  • Use the … menu to rename (Edit name) or delete the set.
TIPS! If you delete a set, already-recorded progress data is kept and archived — it is not lost.

Linked programs

In the panel on the right you connect the set to one or more programs using Link program, which opens a list of your school's programs.

Linking a set to a program means every class in that program shares the same criteria — instructors in any of those classes track progress against the same list. Remove a link by clicking the x on the program chip; previously recorded progress is kept.

A set can be linked to multiple programs, and the Used in column on the overview page reflects these links.
